Cruise Ship Sinking: Italian Ship Mishap & Disaster

Costa Concordia is the name of the Italian Cruise Passenger Ship which hit the rocks near the sea shore in Italy when the Captain of the ship allegedly tried to show off to his friend at the coast by going too close to the sea shore to give him a “salute”. As the ship neared the sea shore, the well charted waters gave the ship a rude jolt as the ship’s bottom touched the rocks underneath making the water gush in at many places and making the ship tilting to one side. The ship tilted dangerously to one side within 10-15 minutes of the impact and gave hardly any time to the passengers to react. Though most of the passengers have been saved from the ship, six have been confirmed dead and about 20 still missing. Amongst the missing is the only Indian crew member who is now feared to be dead.

For the new age ships which are well equipped with powerful engines and the latest navigational gadgets, such accidents are just not pardonable. The captain of the ship was held soon after the incident and is being questioned by the Italy Police.

One of the passengers recounted the incident as the story of Titanic as depicted in the Legendary Kate Winslet-Leonardo Di Capri Blockbuster by the same name playing out in front of their eyes. There was utter chaos all around. The only difference being that the ship partially sunk in shallow waters near the sea shore and help was quick to come. It is because of this only that most of the lives have been saved. The incident also highlights the importance of keeping adequate safety measures at sea as in any other place as well.
